The London Underground: Where to Work for an Easy Commute

The London Underground: Where to Work for an Easy Commute

The Best London Underground Lines and Stations for your Business

Businesses seeking to maximise their location in terms of global commerce, politics, and culture need to look no further than London. As a worldwide leader in business, culture, government, diplomacy, and education — and as one of only two alpha++ cities in the world (alongside New York) — London is unsurpassed in terms of supplying businesses with the most premium locations for office space and serviced offices. Of course, transportation to and from the office will always be a primary concern in a city the size of London. Fortunately, London also boasts one of the world's oldest, largest, and most renowned mass-transit systems. London’s famed Underground can provide easy and convenient access to all of the city’s most important business centres.

After all, why bother risking car traffic in one of the busiest cities in the world if you can get much easier access to the office via the Underground, or the “tube,” as it is commonly known? Thus, when searching for a serviced office in London, it’s a good idea for a business to take a close look at the different lines on the Underground system and which specific stations will serve its locational needs the best.

Of course, as we have learned from the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of remote working, office commutes are not quite as essential as they once were. But still, many businesses prefer to have a physical office — and physical workers — in place. And for businesses looking for the easiest commute into London, choosing an office close to one of the many popular London tube stations is a good idea to minimise workers' time away from home.

With 11 lines covering more than 400 km and 270 stations, the London Underground can make the commute to and from any office in the city much easier than it would be otherwise. The London Underground is one of the best ways to move around the city and is the favoured transport option for around five million people every day.

Here are the top lines and some of their key stations where businesses can find unique options for their next office.

Office Space Near the Victoria Line

London’s Victoria Line presents a unique opportunity for businesses seeking to maximise the potential for convenient transportation when deciding where to place their offices. Running between Brixton and Walthamstow Central, the Victoria Line stops at not one but two of London’s major train stations.

The line’s stop at Victoria Station gives commuters easy access to London's second-busiest train station. The line also stops at the major transportation hub of King’s Cross and more intermediary stations, such as Euston, Highbury and Islington, and Brixton.

The Victoria Station stop provides significant advantages for office workers around the area. From here, office workers can easily catch a train, take a bike, or even walk to several other major commercial and cultural centres in London. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Victoria Station’s transportation hubs are all the more practical, with their modernised features, such as elevators and larger reception areas that are well-designed for social distancing.

The Victoria Line’s stop at Oxford Circus Station also serves as an excellent connection point for numerous other major lines on the London Underground, including the Bakerloo and Central lines.

With reduced commute times between key tube stations in London, by as much as 80%, stations along the Elizabeth line including Paddington, Liverpool Street, and Canary Wharf to name a few have quickly become much more desirable for businesses looking to bring their team together in a central location.

These sleek and modern stations offer new accessibility and information features, making navigation easy for anyone who needs to use transit.

Office Space Near the Jubilee Line

London’s Jubilee Line is perhaps better suited than any other to provide office spaces as close as possible to London's political and business hearts. Westminster Station, located on the Jubilee Line, offers close access to the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey and the central access routes of Whitehall and Westminster Bridge. From this centralised location in the City of Westminster, offices near Westminster Station can provide easy access to important political and business contacts within the larger city of London.

The Jubilee Line also stops at Waterloo Station, a major transit hub in the heart of London. Thus, offices near the Jubilee Line’s Waterloo Station can provide unmatched ease of necessary transportation throughout the city. Other major stations on the Jubilee Line are its western terminus at Stanmore Station, Bond Street Station, London Bridge Station, and its eastern terminus at Stratford Station, the U.K.’s busiest train terminal.

Office Space Near the District Line

The Underground’s District Line runs from Upminster in the east, with western forks running to Edgware Road, Wimbledon, Kensington, Ealing Broadway, and Richmond. Businesses looking to provide their employees with easy access to some of the hottest up-and-coming commercial London neighbourhoods don’t have to look any further than London’s District Line. The entire line stretches from Upminster in the east, across the length of the Thames, and finally splits into two sub-lines that access Wimbledon and Edgware Road.

In the centre of the line lies its station in London’s Whitechapel neighbourhood. Thanks to recent work by some of the area’s top businesses and entrepreneurs, Whitechapel is quickly becoming one of the city’s premier locations to do business. Offices near Whitechapel will provide excellent access to multiple businesses, law offices, and transportation hubs without the exorbitant costs of areas like Westminster.

The Monument, Aldgate East and Tower Hill stations are other major stops along the District Line.

Office Space Near the Central Line

As the second-busiest of all of London’s Underground lines, the Central Line is no stranger to getting people to the city’s best business and cultural centres. As its name suggests, the Central Line is central to many of London’s most prominent and business-friendly neighbourhoods. For example, some major stations along the line are West Ruislip (its western terminus), Tottenham Court Road, Bond Street, Chancery Lane, Holborn, Bank, Notting Hill Gate, and Epping (its eastern terminus).

The line also stops at the Oxford Circus Station, which serves as a significant intersection of multiple Underground lines, providing office workers with easy access to several different lines to vital parts of the city.

But for the Central Line in particular, perhaps the best station to be near is the line’s Liverpool Street Station. This Underground station is connected to the major rail station at Liverpool Street, providing exceptional access to National Rail services to other parts of London and the United Kingdom.

But, transportation aside, the area around Liverpool street has recently become a major centre of business and entrepreneurship in its own right. Areas around Liverpool Street Station, including Eldon Street and Finsbury Circus, have recently seen a great deal of development. Thus, the Liverpool Street Station offers ample office space at more affordable prices than other, trendier areas of the city.

Office Space Near the Piccadilly Line

Going from Cockfosters Station to Uxbridge and Heathrow’s Terminal 5, the London Underground’s Piccadilly Line has no shortage of cultural attractions. Tourists from around the world flock to its namesake stop at the iconic Piccadilly Circus Station to catch live theatre in the West End, visit some of the area’s best restaurants and clubs, and otherwise just enjoy this iconic London neighbourhood.

The area around Piccadilly Circus Station has also recently become a significant hub for business. In fact, in 2022, the Heart of London Business Alliance, representing more than 500 businesses around Piccadilly Circus, announced a new business reinvigoration project for the area called “West End 2027.” Over the next few years, this plan seeks to revitalise this area hurt by the COVID-19 pandemic. Of course, the revitalisation of businesses and attractions will bring much available office space. Businesses looking to set up in one of London’s most vibrant and central areas will find the neighbourhood around Piccadilly Circus Station an ideal location.

In addition to Piccadilly Circus, the Piccadilly Line also stops at major neighbourhoods and commercial centres, including Leicester Square, Convent Garden, and the transportation hub of King’s Cross St. Pancras Station.

With stops beginning at Barking Station in the east, the crown jewel of the Hammersmith & City Line is its namesake — and western terminus — Hammersmith Station, located right in the heart of West London's most vibrant and connected area.

In addition to the numerous global businesses located near Hammersmith Station, the area also includes large exhibition centres to serve any corporate event, numerous deluxe shopping malls, and excellent cultural and athletic attractions, including three different football clubs.

The Hammersmith & City Line also has stations on the major National Rail hubs of King’s Cross/St. Pancras stations, Liverpool Street Station, and Euston Station. Finally, the line provides direct access to other business and cultural centres in London, such as Euston Square and Barbican stations.

Office Space Near the Metropolitan Line

Beginning at its station at Aldgate, the Metropolitan Line provides vital access to some of the best and most business-friendly neighbourhoods from the City of London to areas in Northern London, such as Harrow, Brent, and Hillingdon, before ending in the north at Chesham Station.

For businesses looking for excellent locations, it’s hard to go wrong with office space on the Metropolitan Line, one particular station of note is the line’s Baker Street stop. Thanks to investment and development by some of the neighbourhoods' businesses and entrepreneurs beginning in 2013, the area around Baker Street Station has seen more than £15 million in development, including infrastructure, transportation, leisure activities, and shops.

Baker Street’s thriving business community also boasts an excellent line of communication with both local and national governmental agencies on the area’s business priorities, making it one of the best places in the city to have an office. In addition to the Baker Street Station, the Underground’s Metropolitan Line also has major stops at King’s Cross/St. Pancras National Rail station, Moorgate, Farrington, and Wembley Park, home of the iconic football stadium.

Office Space Near the Northern Line

Stretching from High Barnet to Morden Station, the Northern Line is one of the London Underground's most unique lines. In addition to spanning a route that takes travellers from North London to South London, the Northern Line is notable for branching into two sublines in three places: Northern London, South London, and Central London. Thus, for companies looking for an office space with easy access, the Northern Line provides unmatched access to various neighbourhoods in the centre, north, and south of the city.

One of the best stations on the Northern Line to have an office is the line’s stop at Charing Cross Station. As one of the city's major transportation hubs, Charing Cross Station provides office workers with excellent access to major parts of the city. People working near Charing Cross have quick and convenient access to the rest of London — and throughout the UK via the easy connection to major National Rail routes.

They will also be able to easily access other major cities and destinations in the country. In addition to its station at Charing Cross, the Northern Line also features stations in the notable neighbourhoods of Goodge Street and Embankment.

Office Space Near the Circle Line

The Underground’s Circle Line, as its name suggests, follows a circle-shaped route through both the City of Westminster and the City of London in the heart of the broader London Metropolitan Area.

The line begins at Hammersmith Station in the west, then diverges in a circle from Paddington Station to Aldgate and Tower Hill. As these areas are, in many respects, the heart and soul of London business and politics, few lines on the Underground will allow you to so easily focus your resources on significant points of interest with the utmost convenience.

In addition to stopping at transportation hubs like Paddington and King’s Cross stations, popular cultural districts like Notting Hill and South Kensington, and the political centre of Westminster, the Circle Line also stops at St. James Park Station. This station serves as a central focal point of London’s business and politics, providing easy access to key commercial districts in the cities of Westminster and London, as well as St. James Park and nearby Buckingham Palace.

Other major stations on this line include Cannon Street, Tower Hill, and Sloan’s Square.
